CJ Removal: PNP Blasts Mahama For Forwarding Petitions to Council of State

The People’s National Party (PNP) has criticised President John Dramani Mahama’s decision to forward the three petitions seeking the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo to the Council of State.
The Chairperson and Leader of the party, Janet Asana Nabla, deems the move by the government a “betrayal of the very women President Mahama promised to empower”.
Describing the move to remove the CJ as “unprecedented”, she reflected on how previous administrations have respected judicial independence and worked with Chief Justices regardless of political differences and urged the President to follow suit.
“This action is yet another betrayal of the very women President Mahama promised to empower. His pledge to implement the Affirmative Action Law and ensure 30% representation of women in his government has been abandoned. Instead of delivering on this promise, he is actively seeking ways to remove those who were already there before his tenure.”
“Women in leadership have fought hard for their positions, and President Mahama’s attempt to remove them is not only partisan but also selfish. Ghanaians must rise and condemn his actions, as history will remember him as the only president who sought to remove a Chief Justice to please his party members.”
According to her, the excessive power vested in the President sponsors such unfortunate decisions.
This, she intends to change through constitutional reforms as proposed by the IEA when her party wins power in future.
“Within our first month in office, the PNP will reduce the excessive powers of the presidency by adopting the constitutional reforms already proposed by credible institutions like the IEA, rather than forming partisan committees to delay the process.”
