Chiefs Must Not Allow Themselves to Be Sidelined- Eswatini King

The King of the Kingdom of Eswatini, His Majesty Mswati III, has encouraged African traditional authorities in the current dispensation to rise above the challenges of the day.
His Majesty observes that chieftaincy in recent times has been threatened by globalisation and western democratic models, often marginalising traditional systems and diminishing their influence.
However, His Majesty asserts that traditional leaders must not compromise but strive for their rightful position in influencing Africa’s identity.
“We must not allow ourselves to be sidelined. Instead, adapt, innovate and reclaim our rightful role in shaping Africa’s future. While we honour our past, we must also scrutinize our traditions. We need to preserve those that define our unique identities and continue to serve our societies well,” His Majesty said in his address to the National House of Chiefs on June 25, 2025.
In Eswatini, the King said traditional leadership is enshrined in the constitution and affirms that chiefs are central to the government system as they are appointed by the King as administrators of communities to resolve disputes and safeguard their heritage.
“They are the foundation of our Monarchy, ensuring the people’s voices reach the throne while upholding the values of unity, respect and progress for all.”
In these roles, he said, tradition and modernity had been harmonized by preserving cultural practices through national ceremonies that celebrates our identity.
He said chiefs under Eswatini’s system of governance play an indispensable role in sustaining the southern African country’s identity.
“This is what we proudly term a Monarchical democracy. We are delighted to share that Eswatini is establishing a dedicated Council of Chiefs, a Chamber of Chiefs who will advise the state on matters of tradition, customs and cultural preservation. These institutionalized roles ensure that the wisdom of our chiefs continues to shape our laws and policies in a rapidly evolving world.”
