BoG Commissions Controversial Head Office Next Week
Ghana’s Central Bank will next week inaugurate its new edifice at Ridge in the Greater Accra Region.
The event is slated for November 20, 2024.
Last year, the move to build a new headquarters called The Bank Square, at a cost of $250 million was brought to public notice by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) who deemed it to be insensitive on the part of the BoG.
It also accused the Bank of inflating the cost of the building. In an open letter to the Governor of the BoG, Dr Ernest Addison, the Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, Mahama Ayariga, accused the Bank’s officials of colluding with the contractors to overprice the “project with a possible view to obtaining personal gain”.
This accusation ended in a petition to the Office of the Special Prosecutor for a probe.
In a press statement dated August 9, the BoG justified that the current 63-year-old building has proven to have lost its strength and resistance to tremors and therefore not fit for purpose.
Additionally, it said the relocation will serve as an advantage towards Ghana’s objective of becoming the financial hub of West Africa which will make the country the best choice for potential Headquarters for a future regional Central Bank.
