August 4 Declared Holiday
The Ministry of Interior has announced August 4, 2022, as a public holiday.
It marks Founders’ Day.
“The general public is hereby informed that Thursday, 4th August 2022 which marks Founders’ Day, is a Statutory Public Holiday and should be observed as such throughout the country”, a statement signed by the Minister for Interior, Ambrose Dery said.
Founders’ Day is set aside to commemorate the contribution of “the Big Six” to Ghana’s Independence.
It was previously observed on August 21 each year as “Founder’s Day”, commemorating the contribution of Dr Kwame Nkrumah, the first president of Ghana and the one who led Ghana to independence from Colonial rule.
But it was altered by President Akufo-Addo, the current present to “Founders’ Day” to celebrate the five other members of the Big Six as well all persons who contributed to Ghana’s independence.
The Big Six includes Kwame Nkrumah Edward Akufo-Addo, Joseph Boakye Danquah, Emmanuel Obetsebi-Lamptey, William Ofori Atta, and Ebenezer Ako-Adjei.
