Atweasin Reunites With Asante Kingdom
Natives of Aburi Atweasin in the Akuapim South District of the Eastern Region have returned and reunited with the Asante Kingdom after being apart for over 300 years.
Atweasin was occupied by Asantes from Kontenase in Bosomtwe following their departure.
Their reunion boils down to a charge from the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II to Kontenasehene Barima Ogyeaboɔ Amankwaa Adunan II, four years ago.
A delegation from Atweasin was led and introduced to Otumfuo on Wednesday, January 18, 2023, at the Manhyia Palace as the King was observing the first Awukudae of the year.
Separation Of Atweasin
According to Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the natives of Kontenase escaped in fear for their lives centuries ago and settled in various parts of the country including Worawora in the Oti Region; Atweasin and Kwahu in the Eastern Region.
“Adusei gave me (the then King) fish. It choked the King and it was deduced that it was an attempted assassination. He was executed and the people of Kontenase- who are relatives of Adusei- fled for fear leaving just the people of Pokufrefre and Atibrekese behind”, he recounted.
Those who settled in Worawora reunited with the kingdom years ago.
Reunion Of Atweasin
Four years ago, when Otumfuo swore in Kotenasehene Barima Ogyeaboɔ Amankwaa Adunan II, he was challenged to search and bring back his brothers home.
This challenge, Barima Ogyeaboɔ said, was taken to heart and worked out.
His efforts yielded the desired result.
Speaking on behalf of the delegation, he said, “the royals who left have been found and they are back to serve Otumfuo and Asanteman”.
He said Atweasin, which has 24 towns and several villages but without a paramount chief, is ready to submit to the Asantehene.
He introduced the chief of Atweasin, Nana Frimpong Kodua II, who was among the delegation to the King.
Otumfuo welcomed the news and appreciated the efforts of Kontenasehene.
He also thanked the delegation from Atweasin for accepting to reunite with the kingdom.
“Thank you for recognising your background.”
He has also given Kotenasehene charge over the newly found royals.
“Your predecessor mistreated those who earlier came to reunite with us. For that reason, I handed them over to Kokofu. I decided to give them back to you when you came. I again hand these people into your care”, Otumfuo told Barima Ogyeaboɔ.
On his part, Nana Frimpong Kodua II thanked His Majesty for accepting and welcoming them back.
“As I stand here I can boldly state that we are Asantes under Otumfuo Osei Tutu II. We shall serve him as Asantes”, he said in an exclusive interview with the media.
Otumfuo will in due time perform the needed customs to formalise their comeback.
