Association Of Magistrates Takes On Sosu For “Political Judges” Comment
The Association of Magistrates and Judges of Ghana (AMJG) says it will file a complaint with the General Legal Council (GLC) against Member of Parliament (MP) for Madina, Francis Xavier Sosu on his “dealing with political judges politically” comment.
The association says the comment of the lawyer “who should know better, the implication of his comment”, was deliberate and calculated to create disaffection against the judiciary and an attempt to scandalise the judiciary and judges, thereby the move to take him on.
“The association thinks this conduct of Hon. Sosu against judges is unfortunate, reckless and misguided coming as it is from a Member of Parliament and a lawyer who should know better.”
It emphasised that “We condemn the said statement in no uncertain terms. Judges do not determine which cases are filed or put before them for hearing. A statement from Hon. Francis Xavier Sosu is an attempt to intimidate judges who are doing nothing other than their normal work.”
Thereby, “Having regard to the seriousness with which the AMJG takes this statement and its potential to do undue damage to the image of the judiciary, the association is lodging a formal complaint against Hon. Sosu to the general Legal Council quickly for his unprofessional statements and utterances which have the potential to tarnish the image of the judiciary as a whole”, Justice Henry Kwofi, President of the Association of Magistrates and Judges of Ghana said.
It will be recalled that the MP for Madina, also a lawyer, in a media interview during the Yentua demonstration cautioned judges wearing party colours underneath their cloaks to desist.
“If you are a judge, your fidelity is to the constitution of Ghana and the laws of Ghana. If you allow yourself to be used as a political judge so that you can do the bidding of the ruling government be warned, be warned because we are watching closely and in the event that there’s a change of power, every political judge will be fished out, every political judge will be dealt with politically”, he said.
