Are You Empowered To Impeach Adwoa Sarfo?; Speaker Asks NPP

The Speaker of Parliament has questioned the authority of the leadership of the New patriotic party for threatening to impeach their very own Sarah Adwoa Sarfo, Member of Parliament for Dome Kwabenya constituency.

The leadership of the NPP are up against Adwoa Sarfo for her perpetual absence from Parliamentary meetings and her “insubordination” at the request of the party to return to Ghana from the States and partake in government businesses in Parliament.

In reaction, Bagbin pointed out that the constitution grants him the sole right to declare any seat vacant.

“When I hear my colleagues in the NPP say that they have removed Adwoa Safo I ask, do you have that power?”, he asked.

“You can use your party to take her off as a member of your party and that can trigger some constitutional consequences but you cannot just go and sit down and say you have removed her because it is only the Speaker that can declare the seat vacant.”

The Speaker recently stated he has no intentions to declare the seat of Adwoa Sarfo vacant.

According to the Speaker, although the 1992 constitution of Ghana calls for the removal of an MP for absence from 15 Parliamentary sittings, it never said fifteen consecutive sitting days in a meeting.
