Amoakohene Advises against AI-assisted Self-Medication

The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Frank Amoakohene, has expressed his disapproval of Artificial Intelligence-assisted self-medication.
According to the politician who doubles as a medical doctor, AI cannot substitute a doctor.
Acknowledging the evolution of technologies in detecting and managing disease, he argued that it is impossible for AI to undertake a proper physical and historical examination and make safe clinical decisions in every situation.
He observes that easy online advice is also worsening self-medication, leading to wrong treatments, delayed diagnosis, drug resistance, and preventable complications.
He therefore warned, “Do not treat yourself based on assumptions. When you feel unwell, visit a health facility, get tested, and follow professional medical guidance. AI can assist, but your doctor protects your life.”
In a second post, he recommended the use of AI by medical practitioners, however, responsibly.
“AI should therefore be seen as a complementary tool, not a replacement for professional medical judgment. Doctors can use AI as a reference, just as they use textbooks, clinical guidelines, or expert consultations. What must be avoided is the dangerous habit of relying solely on AI for prescriptions, especially for self-medication.”
