Akwatia Line: Assembly Clashes with Youth Over Land Dispute
Tensions escalated in the Asokore Mampong Municipality as some youth at Akwatia Line clashed with the local Assembly over a disputed land.
In an interview on Nkwantannanso with George Adjei on July 18, Assembly Member for Akwatia Line Electoral Area, Hon Ali Ahmed indicated that the root of the conflict lies in the Assembly’s plan to construct a market in the area.
The land selected for the market’s construction has been a subject of dispute between the Assembly and a private individual.
In an attempt to halt the construction, the individual who claims ownership of the land sought an injunction against the Assembly. However, the court dismissed the injunction request two weeks ago, allowing the construction to proceed.
Despite the court ruling, tensions did not subside. Confrontations occurred between the contractors hired by the Assembly to work on the disputed land and some agitated youth from the community.
“We went there to inspect the work and realised that some youth were preventing the contractors from working. It is alleged that the youth were brought by the person who said he owed the land,” Mr Ahmed said.
Unfortunately, during the heated altercation, one person sustained injuries.
To maintain order and prevent further escalation, the police were present at the site to ensure peace prevailed.
