Akufo-Addo Denounces Trump Assassination Attempt
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has added his voice to that of world leaders to denounce the attempted assassination of former United States of America President, Donald Trump.
In a statement released two days after the incident in Pennsylvania, the Commander-in-Chief of Ghana’s Armed Forces said politically-motivated violence shouldn’t be tolerated in any place in the world.
He recognizes that it undermines democracy and peace.
“On behalf of the Government and people of Ghana, I condemn in the strongest terms the attempted assassination of President Donald Trump. Such acts of politically-motivated violence have no place in our world, and undermine the principles of democracy and peace that we all hold dear.”
He also conveyed his heartfelt best wishes to Trump and the American people.
Trump came under attack on July 13, 2024, sustaining a gunshot injury on his right ear at a rally in Butlerin Pennsylvania.
The suspect identified by FBI officials as Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, a kitchen worker from Bethel Park, Pennsylvania was later shot dead at the spot by a Secret Service sniper.
He was said to be a registered Republican.
Lawmakers in the US blame President Joe Biden for instigating the attack after stating “It’s time to put Trump in a bullseye” during a private phone call with donors last week.
The 81-year-old President has since shown remorse for the statement.
“It was a mistake to use the word. I didn’t say crosshairs. I meant bullseye, I meant to focus on him. Focus on what he’s doing,” he said in an interview with NBC.
