Akua Donkor’s Replacement Disqualified by EC

The Electoral Commission (EC) has disqualified Philip Appiah Kubi popularly known as Roman Fada from contesting for Presidency on the ticket of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP) in the stead of its late founder and former candidate, Madam Akua Donkor.

This was announced on November 12, 2024, during an emergency IPAC meeting in Accra, multiple reports say.

His disqualification has been attributed to errors and irregularities detected in his nomination forms.

The EC has yet to publicly issue a statement to this effect.

The broadcast journalist, prior to the death of Akua Donkor was her Vice Presidential Candidate. He filed his nomination on November 5, 2024.

The only female presidential candidate in this year’s election passed away at the Ridge Hospital on Monday, October 28, 2024, while receiving treatment.

Her death prompted the EC to halt the printing of the ballot papers which were nearing completion to enable the GFP to nominate a candidate in her stead.

Directing the party to elect a replacement, it explained that the 1992 Constitution and the Public Elections Regulations, 2020, C.I. 127, are not clear on processes to follow in the event of the death of a Presidential Candidate.

However, it noted that Article 50 (4) of the 1992 Constitution provides that “Where at the close of nominations, but before the election, one of the candidates dies, a further period of ten days shall be allowed for nominations…”
