AirtelTigo Introduces eSIM

Ghanaians with Embedded SIM (eSIM) enabled handsets can from today visit any AirtelTigo shop to get themselves an eSIM, the telecom network operator has announced.

Last week AirtelTigo announced it has introduced the eSIM service in the country.

eSIM is a digital SIM that allows you to use a cellular plan from your carrier without having to use a physical nano-SIM. It is a programmable SIM card that is embedded directly into a device.

The Chief Marketing Officer of AitelTigo, Atul Narain Singh explains that eSIM provides added flexibility to eSIM-compatible devices by transforming them from single SIM to dual SIM devices.

He is quoted to have said, “AirtelTigo eSIM will also make Life Simple for customers who are frequent international travelers and must manually switch between SIMs whenever they cross borders.

“Smartphone users can dial *#06# to check whether their devices support eSIM or not; phones supporting eSIM will show a barcode with ‘EID’ at the beginning of the code on the screen. We are very confident that our existing and new customers will quickly move to our eSIM for what it delivers.”

eSIM upgrade for existing Airtel Tigo customers comes at no cost according to Leo Skarlatos, Chief Executive Officer of the mobile operator.

“The AirtelTigo eSIM upgrade is free for existing AirtelTigo customers. We encourage customers with eSIM-enabled handsets to visit any AirtelTigo shop from Monday the 28th of November, to get themselves an eSIM and be a part of this industry first.”

Reports indicate that MTN was the first to introduce an eSIM, however, no official communication has been made about it.

Following the introduction by AirtelTigo, some Ghanaians have claimed they have been using an MTN eSIM since August this year.

On July 15 this year, MTN launched eSIM in Nigeria.
