Aggrieved Wood Sellers and Traders at Akwatialine Demand Relocation Before Demolition
Wood sellers and traders at Akwatialine, in the Asokore Mampong Municipality of the Ashanti Region, have demanded that they be relocated before any demolition exercise takes place.
According to the traders, the private developer barricaded their premises without any notice from him or the Assembly, and asked police personnel to evict them.
These traders have been operating on the land for over 60 years, and have been asked to leave the area for redevelopment purposes.
They also accused the police of inflicting injuries on them in their bid to evict them.
Speaking to Opemsuo News, the Secretary of the Wood Sellers Association, Mohammed Umar, revealed that the invasion by the police led to gunshots and brutality as the traders resisted the eviction.
“We demand the Assembly to halt the barricading exercise till the traders are relocated,” he said.
He also called on the government and other stakeholders to intervene.
The Municipal Chief Executive for Asokore Mampong, Kennedy Kankam however said that there are no plans to evict the traders. He explained that the redevelopment is in phases, and the traders will still be allowed to operate within the area.
