Afrobarometer Survey: Majority Of Ghanaians Believe The Country Is Heading In Wrong Direction

The latest Afrobarometer survey on Economy, public services, policy implementation and evaluation, and taxation has revealed that majority of Ghanaians believe the country is heading in the wrong direction.

According to Senior Researcher at Ghana Center for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana), Mr. Mohammed Awal Ghanaians were approached for their opinions on the progress and direction of the country based on the economy and their living conditions.

The Senior CDD-Ghana researcher explained that Ghanaians have lost hope in the current Akufo-Addo-led government upon the assessment of their living conditions, the economy, failure of most policies and government programs, current happenings in the Education sector, the rate of insecurity, employment, revenue loopholes, economic hardship have caused the people to believe that the country is not heading in the right direction and there is no a sign of positive change in the year ahead.

The people do not trust the government with the taxes especially the E-Levy to be utilized appropriately for those taxes.

MR. Awal added that “the survey taken in 2019 showed positive results based on the views of Ghanaians”. “2019’s edition showed that the country was heading in the right direction and had a brighter future under the same Akufo-Addo led government according to Ghanaians but seems to have changed in recent times due to the current economic indicators”.

He insisted that the sharp change of views about the country took place between 2022 and 2022 due to the level of hardships that engulfed the country within these periods.

He highlighted that “it is also worth noting that the Covid-19 pandemic has impacted the country negatively. The global economic crises brought about by the pandemic have hit even the advanced countries like the United Kingdom and the United States of America which is not different from our case”. The CDD-Ghana expects an immediate response from the government and deal with the challenges, especially with the economy to stabilize and improve upon the living conditions in the country.

Mr. Awal reiterated that “the findings from the survey have direct effect on the upcoming 2024 elections and a wake-up call to the NPP government to do things right in order to be maintained in power”.
