African Games: William Amponsah Wins Silver In Half Marathon
After breaking his own record in the men’s 10,000m earlier this week, William Amponsah has won the country’s first medal in a marathon in African Games.
He came second in the men’s half marathon race on Friday, March 22, 2024, at the University of Ghana.
He crossed the finish line in one hour, five minutes and thirteen seconds (1:05:13), winning the country a silver medal, the country’s first in the marathons in the Games.
Eritrea’s Amare Hailemicael won the race in 1:05:04 while Zimbabwe’s Isaac Mpofu finished third in 1:05:37 to claim bronze.
In an interview with CNR, Amponsah said the feat is a source of inspiration for him ahead of the Olympics.
“I’m solely inspired. Every achievement I’ve made is inspiring me to do more.”
“There is the notion that East Africans are the best in this race. It gives me that inspiration to work hard and compete in this game.”
Amponsah set a new national record in the men’s 10,000m event when he finished fifth. In 2020, set his 29:53.78 record.
