“Acheampong Was Virtuous, We Just Didn’t Understand Him”– Otumfuo
The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has stated that Ghana’s former Head of State, the late Ignatius Kutu Acheampong was a virtuous and visionary man who wasn’t understood by the people of the nation.
He says Acheampong’s intentions for the state were misinterpreted which caused the lack of his praiseworthiness.
“The news of the overthrow of the Progress Party and its leader Dr. Kofi Busia made us impatient to understand him till now; he was a generous man and never forgot those he walked with”
“What he did for Ghana wasn’t recognized, I remember “Operation Feed Yourself” which was meant to improve employment and agriculture”.
The Asantehene went on to that, Acheampong was said to have met enough funds during his regime to have changed Ghana with, yet his wife as a first lady had to fend for herself whilst his children were pitiful.
“His wife was pitiful abroad because as the first lady she had to work as a midwife to cater for herself when you listen to all these then you ask yourself where the money that her wife couldn’t enjoy was”
Otumfuo made this historical recall when the wife to the late former Head of State, Madam Faustina Acheampong, his son, Anthony Acheampong, and two daughters Elizabeth Peprah Acheampong and Janet Bell Acheampong were at the premises of Otumfuo to present a copy of a book written about the Head of State titled “General Acheampong: the life and times of Ghana’s head of state”.
The book was put together by Professor Baffuor Agyeman-Duah.
Otumfuo affirmed the belief that the true embodiment of Acheampong would be reflected in the piece presented to him.
