Accra Sports Stadium Approved to Host Sudan Qualifier
The Confederation of Africa Football (CAF) has approved the use of the Accra Sports Stadium for Ghana’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Sudan next week.
It comes after the Confederation inspected the pitch upon a request by the Ministry of Youth and Sports through the Ghana Football Association (GFA).
‘’Following a comprehensive review of the reports of the CAF independent inspection regarding the Cape Coast and Accra Sports Stadia, we are pleased to inform you that the Accra Sports Stadium has been approved to host the AFCON Qualifiers for Morocco 2025,” CAF said in a letter to the GFA.
It further urged the FA and other responsible bodies to prioritise the necessary enhancements of the pitch and other critical areas of the stadium to ensure an optimal experience for both teams and the attending fans.
It added, “Please note that CAF will continue to closely monitor the readiness of the stadium for this match, as well as for future CAF-sanctioned events’’.
Ghana will host Sudan in their third qualifier on October 11, 2024.
Background
CAF withdrew the category 3 licence of the Baba Yara Sports Stadium after it hosted the last AFCON qualifier against Angola on September 5.
The Confederation cited technical infractions, including an unsuitable playing field for the decision and urged the country to find a venue outside the country for the next game.
Later last month, the Ministry of Youth and Sports directed the FA to write and request an inspection of the Accra Sports Stadium and the Legon Stadium for the game.
