Abuse The Great Oath at Your Own Risk; Asantehene to Chiefs
In his final remarks at the last Asanteman Council meeting for 2024, held on Monday, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II cautioned chiefs about the gravity and sanctity of the Great Oath.
His Majesty reiterated that no chief or queen would be spared the implication if he or she dishonestly invokes the Great Oath in any form of contention.
At the council meeting on December 16, he said, “We meet here to settle disputes in Asanteman to bring peace after thorough investigation. Each day, the Great Oath is invoked so this meeting of ours will always be necessary. Dishonesty will draw the invocation of the Great Oath. I pray we cross this year and after the next year, we look at all the cases. All chiefs with cases here, in the new year, we will look at this.
“In the past 25 years, I have told you not to abuse the great Oath by dishonestly invoking it. Know what you are doing when you invoke it. If you come out guilty after the Great Oath, you know the implication. In such, there will be nothing like a plea of guilty (Di Bem).”
Many traditional authorities have lost their stools for abusing the Great Oath. The latest was the Queen of Denyase Traditional Council, Nana Adutwiwaa Bonin III on October 14.
Other culprits were Nana Opia Mensah II, Wirempehene and Opanin Kwaku Kyere, Ejisu-Kyrekrom Dikro who were respectively destooled on September 2, 2024, and September 17, 2024.
