A/R: Stay Away from Galamsey Activities- MMDCEs Warned

The Chief Executives of Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies in the Ashanti Region have been warned against their direct and indirect involvement in illegal mining activities.
They have been ordered to stay away from the menace.
The caution was relayed by the Regional Minister, Dr Frank Amoakohene, on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama during an engagement on Thursday, October 2, 2025.
“The President has declared – No mining on our rivers and no mining in our forest reserves. No official is expected to be complicit or act contrary to this directive.”
He affirmed that anyone who engages in influence peddling or abuse of office in this regard will be arrested and prosecuted without fear or favour.
“As key stakeholders of this government, I urged them to actively assist in reporting any illegal mining activities to assist in our efforts to protect our forest, waterbodies and the environment,” he reported in a Facebook post.
It comes as national discourse has been centred on the menace which is wreaking havoc on the water bodies and forest reserves of the country.
The government has in recent days come under public criticism over its mild response, with stakeholders calling for decisive action to root out illegal activity.
As part of the efforts, the Presidency has invited Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) to a meeting on October 3 aimed at providing a platform for frank and constructive dialogue between the Government and civil society organizations on the menace of illegal mining.
But a section has criticised this move.
