There Are No Land Disputes On Ownership Of Customary Lands – Sammy Gyamfi
National Communications Officer for the NDC, Lawyer Mr. Sammy Gyamfi has stated that “there is no land dispute on the ownership of customary lands.
According to him, lands in the Ashanti region are in the custody of the Asantehene and not even the government can claim ownership.
Speaking on Opemsuo Radio with Agudey on the Nkwatannanso morning show, Lawyer Sammy Gyamfi said, the Constitution stipulates that lands accumulated by the government from their rightful owners must be given due or fair compensation which has not happened in the case of lands acquired from Asantehene in the region from the era of colonial government till the current Akufo-Addo led administration.
He stated that, the four hundred and nine (409) acres of land in question released to the Asantehene recently do not belong to the government but was given to it by Asantehene some years ago as far as the colonial era. He highlighted that these lands cover the areas of officers’ mess at Denyame to Bekwai Roundabout, and extend to Santasi Roundabout.
He continued that, the government after acquisition of these lands has not used them for developmental projects but sold them to private individuals, commercial organizations, and politicians including both NDC and NPP Officials.
He added that, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II used the appropriate legal approach in reclaiming customary lands handed to the government that has not been put into proper use which began during former President Mahama’s regime to the current Akufo-Addo administration.
Lawyer Sammy Gyamfi said, it is legally right for Otumfuo to reclaim his lands that were confiscated by the government. He emphasized that, it is unfair and unjust for the government to benefit massively from the Asantehene without paying anything or fair compensation to him.
