Afenyo Markin Blames Speaker Bagbin For Delayed SONA

The Deputy Majority leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo Markin, has pointed fingers at the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, for the delay in the presentation of the State Of The Nation’s Address (SONA).

The address, which is a mandate of the president per the constitution, was initially scheduled for March 3, 2022, but was postponed indefinitely.

In Parliament today, Afenyo Markin said the delay in the address from President Akufo-Addo is due to the frequent absence of the Speaker.

According to Afenyo Markin, the presence of the president before Parliament is premised on the leadership of Parliament and not the president.

“Our duty as a House is to programme Mr President to come. It is not Mr President who is refusing to come, he is ready. Mr President is ready. It is on leadership and Mr Speaker to programme Mr President. Mr Speaker is unavoidably absent. He is not in the jurisdiction. We are talking about the Speaker”, he said.

He however assured that the Speaker and the leadership of the House will programme the president to come and deliver a message on the State of the Nation
