Agric Minister: E-levy Should Be Praised Rather Than Condemned
Owusu Afriyie Akoto, Minister for Ghana’s Agriculture is of the view that Ghanaians should, instead of mounting up against the Electronic Transfer Levy (E-levy), rather embrace and hail it.
The taxing initiative proposed on the table by the Akufo-Addo led government, for the purpose of undertaking infrastructural development and creating jobs, is a way of dealing with tax evasion among citizens, he said.
“E-levy is breaking a cycle of serious attempts to bring in as many taxpayers as possible and it is a noble gesture that should be praised rather than be condemned”, he indicated and described as unfair, the fact that the majority of the country’s population evades taxation.
He indicated that “Our expectations of government services are rising by the day, skyrocketing. We need roads, we need this, we need that. So where is the money going to come from, it should come from ourselves”.
Owusu Afriyie Akoto expressed confidence in the eventual passage of the tax policy during an interview on the Citi Breakfast Show.
“E-levy will be passed. It will be passed and it will be good for the people of this country”.
According to him, the cedi depreciation to the dollar, inflation rate and the higher cost of living in the country currently “is the even more reason we should have the E-levy passed”.
