Prez Akufo-Addo Bent On Getting “Famous Tax” Passed
The president of Ghana, Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo has given indications that the “famous” 1.5% Electronic Transactions levy (E-levy), formerly 1.75%, will be passed by parliament.
This is despite Global Info Analytics’ latest report that 56% and 86% of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) and National Democratic Congress (NDC) supporters respectively are against the levy.
Addressing a delegation of chiefs from the Volta Region, the president asserted that the country can be self-reliant with the introduction of the levy.
“Is it possible for us to forever be dependent on foreign grants and foreign loans to keep the economy going? We ourselves will have to find the money for our development. That is the reason why it has become necessary for us to introduce these measures like this famous tax which has caused so much dispute.
“Nevertheless we will continue. I’m determined to persevere to make sure that we find means to address some of the issues”, he said.
He further added that “Government doesn’t have any money on its own, it gets money from the taxes from the people”.
