O/R: Troops Deployed to Enforce Order at Nkwanta after 3 Died in Renewed Clash

Troops have been deployed to conflict-hit Nkwanta town in the Oti Region, the acting Spokesperson of the President, Felix Ofosu Kwakye has announced.

This followed a renewed chieftaincy conflict in the town on Wednesday, January 15, 2025.

It is reported that three persons have perished in the clash which has continued in the past three days.

In a Facebook post, Ofosu Kwakye said police and military personnel were deployed earlier to calm the situation and restore order on Wednesday.

Additional troops, he said, had also been deployed on Friday, January 17, 2025.

“On the Nkwanta clashes, believed to stem from a Chieftaincy dispute, a combined team of Police and Military personnel were quickly deployed to restore calm. Additional troops are being sent today to enforce law and order.”

Nkwanta is one of the numerous towns that suffered the imposition of a curfew under the previous administration due to the conflict.

In a statement issued on November 12, 2024, by former Interior Minister Henry Quartey, the town was subjected to a curfew from 8:00 pm – 6:00am as the Government appealed to all sections to exercise restraint and to use the established mechanisms for the resolution of all their conflicts and disputes.

Additionally, the town folks were banned from carrying arms, ammunition or any offensive weapons, assuring that any persons found with any arms or ammunition would be arrested and prosecuted.
