How Intel by Asantehene’s Son Stoked a Battle Between Asante and Techiman
Sometime after Baffoe Pim, the son of Asantehene Opoku Ware and Sarponmaa-the niece of Amakomhene- was enstooled chief over Nkoranza Traditional Area, a battle ensued between Techiman and Asante.
This was on the back of an intel he had given to his father about an intended ploy by Techimanhene to attack Asante.
Speaking about this aspect of Asante history during an Asanteman Council meeting at the Manhyia Palace on January 13, 2025, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II said his son threw Techimanhene under the bus after the latter confided in him about some guns he had in his possession.
Baffoe Pim inferred that Techimanhene was preparing for battle against his father and therefore informed the Asantehene who retaliated with a battle he won.
His gesture was deemed as gossip and betrayal from the perspective of the Techiman people but faithfulness and heroism from that of Asantes.
As a result, the Techiman people instituted the Apoo Festival celebrated annually, Otumfuo said.
As part of the festival, they hold a procession during which insults, proverbs, maxims, songs, and historical recounting of the Bono Kingdom are exchanged; many of these insults, proverbs, and songs are directed towards the Asante, sophiaapenkra.com reports.
This story was referenced by the King when Nana Kwame Baffoe, Nkoranzahene, showed up at the Manhyia Palace to take the oath of allegiance after his legitimate enstoolment.
