Ghana Appoint Frimpong Manso as U17 Head Coach
Ghana have named the Head Coach of Bibiani Gold Stars, Stephen Frimpong Manso, as the substantive head coach for the Black Starlets following the resignation of Laryea Kingston in May 2024.
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) announced his appointment on January 9, 2025.
“The Ghana Football Association has appointed Coach Stephen Frimpong Manso as the new Head Coach of the Male National Under-17 team, the Black Starlets.”
The 65-year-old will be assisted by Nana Kweku Agyemang and Jacob Nettey in his duty after they were retained as Assistant coaches.
According to the FA, the CAF Licence A Coaching certificate holder’s appointment reflects its belief in his ability to restore Ghana to a lofty perch in Youth football in Africa and the world.
“His expertise will undoubtedly be an asset to the Black Starlets as they get set to commence preparations for a number of international assignments.
“As the team gears up for these assignments, it is anticipated that Coach Manso’s experience and know-how will help shape the team’s strategy and tactics, ensuring they’re well-prepared for the challenges ahead.”
Laryea Kingston stepped down as head coach for the Black Starlets on May 25, 2024, after the team’s 2-1 loss to Burkina Faso who would eventually emerge as winners in WAFU ZONE B Competition.

Frimpong Manso is a seasoned Coach who started his career as a defender. He featured for the senior national team, the Black Stars, from 1986-1995.
The former defender also plied his trade with clubs including Asante Kotoko and Kuwaiti club Al Shabab.
As a coach, he has managed clubs like Stade d’Abidjan, Asante Kotoko, Karela United, B. A. United, Kessben FC (currently Medeama SC) and Nkoranza Warriors.
Meanwhile, he has previously coached Ghana’s National U17 team and the Black Meteors.
