Apologize or Be Sued: KT Hammond Warns Captain Smart Over Alleged Tribalistic Comments
Adansi Asokwa Member of Parliament (MP), Kobina Tahir Hammond, has issued a stern demand for an apology and retraction from broadcaster Blessed Godsbrain Smart, popularly known as Captain Smart, over alleged defamatory comments.
The claims centre around a viral video circulating on social media, where Captain Smart purportedly attributes tribalistic remarks to the MP.
In a letter dated December 16, 2024, addressed to Media General GH Ltd, K.T. Hammond’s lawyer, Kweku Y. Paintsil, referenced the video, which depicts the MP appearing agitated in an outdoor setting.
According to the letter, Captain Smart’s commentary over the video accuses Mr. Hammond of objecting to an “Ewe person” running for a parliamentary seat in the Ashanti Region.
The MP categorically denies making any such statement, labeling the claims as false and defamatory.
He argues that the accusations have caused him significant distress, embarrassment, and reputational harm.
The letter demands an immediate public retraction and apology, with terms subject to approval by Mr. Hammond’s legal team.
Additionally, the MP is seeking substantial compensation for the alleged damage to his reputation and feelings, along with reimbursement for legal costs incurred.
“In the circumstance, our client requires from you as a matter of urgency a full and unequivocal public retraction and apology in terms to be approved by us, and an undertaking not to repeat these allegations.”
“We have also advised him that he is entitled to substantial compensation for the injury to his reputation and feelings, as to which we invite your proposals. Our client will also require payment by you of all the legal costs he has incurred in his matter.”
The letter further warned that if no satisfactory response is received by December 18, 2024, legal action would be initiated.
