2024 Election: Akua Donkor to Be Retained on Ballot Paper

The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has taken a decision to retain the deceased Presidential aspirant of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP) on the Presidential ballot paper in the upcoming election.

It comes after the GFP’s nominee to replace her in the polls was disqualified for some errors and irregularities on his nomination forms submitted on November 5, 2024.

At an IPAC meeting on November 12, this was made known. The EC told other political party representatives that Madam Akua Donkor’s image will be maintained on the paper at her number 3 position to avoid disruptions.

This means that the original positions of all other Presidential candidates on the ballot paper will not be affected.

The Commission has also decided to annul all votes that will be cast in her name.

Akua Donkor, 72, died while receiving treatment at Greater Accra Regional Hospital known as Ridge Hospital in Accra following a referral from the Nsawam Government Hospital in the Eastern Region.

Profile
Donkor was born in February 1952 and hailed from Afigya Kwabre District in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. She was a cocoa farmer by profession.

She is not known to have had any formal education.

Madam Donkor set out on her presidential ambition in 2012 where she applied to contest; however, she was disqualified by the Electoral Commission for not meeting the requirements.

This prompted her to throw her support behind Papa Kwesi Ndoum of the Progressive People’s Party.

She was again disqualified by the Electoral Commission from contesting in the 2016 election.

Madam Donkor finally got the clearance to contest in the Presidential election in 2020 where she was among the three women presidential candidates. Out of the 12 candidates, she came fifth.

She again qualified for the 2024 elections and announced Mr Kwabena Agyeman Appiah Kubi known in showbiz as Roman Fada as her running mate for the 2024 general election.
