Let’s Maintain Name of Bankoman SHS; Bankohene Pleads with Asantehene
After conceding that the piece of land on which Bankoman Senior High School (SHS) has been erected belongs to Sekyere, the chief of Banko, Nana Kwabena Boateng Sefa alongside his Queen pleaded with Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II to maintain the name of the school.
Banko and Sekyere were embroiled in a dispute over the true owners of that piece of land as the latter was bent on renaming the school.
This led to the establishment of a Committee to probe it.
The Committee report was presented to the Kumasi Traditional Council on September 30, 2024, at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi.
The abled Committee chaired by Manhyiahene Nana Akwasi Agyemang in their meticulous investigation found that the land belonged to Sekyere.
Accepting the findings, Bankohene Nana Kwabena Boateng Sefa urged Otumfuo to prevent efforts to rename the second-cycle institution.
“I plead with Otumfuo to intervene and stop efforts to rename the school. Banko has toiled over this school.”
The same plea was tendered in by the Queen of Banko when the Asantehene gave her the chance to speak.
Charge
Otumfuo charged the Committee to go back and survey the lands belonging to Sekyere but occupied by the people of Banko for farming.
“I wanted to know if all Banko lands are secure and that Bankohene has assured me. I want to secure the farmlands of the Banko people in Sekyere. The Committee must survey that and document it for the chiefs to append their signatures so that misunderstandings do not arise in the future.
“I want Banko to continue to occupy those lands and I don’t want them to be kicked out by Sekyere. Sekyere has enough lands to spare for my people. Banko is there because of me.”
The committee has thus been given a week to finish and present that report.
Verdict Postponed
No decision was taken by the Asantehene over the name of the school.
His Majesty will make his final ruling known to all at the next meeting, he announced.
