I’m a Proud Ewe- Celestine Donkor after Ewe Name Roll
Gospel musician Celestine Donkor has expressed her deep-seated pride as a member of the Ewe ethnic group following outrage from her folks over a recent “joke” about the density and distinctive nature of the surnames of the tribe.
The award-winning musician took to her Facebook page to render an unqualified apology to her town men and women for what she described as a joke-gone-bad as she indicated that it does not mean she is ashamed of her name and tribe.
“I granted an interview on Today’s Woman and when I found the host, Cookie Tee is an Ewe, I just got excited and we started joking about the heaviness of our surnames. It was just a joke that came up in our conversation. To my surprise, from all the comments I have read so far, turns out to be a bad and an expensive joke and who am I? I’m just human.”
“Most of times when we go on these interviews, as much as we have the pure heart and the clear mind, it’s not everything that you will say that will be pleasing to somebody… With love and respect to all of you, I take all the comments in good faith. I interpret them as the expression of your love because those who love you correct you in your wrongs.”
Expressing the pride she wears as a result of her tribe, she said it pushed her to give two of her daughters Ewe names. She also pointed out that her tribe has in no way been shoved in her musical career as it has taken centre stage in her calling by God.
“This in no way tarnishes my pride as an Ewe. I have proven it over the years in my journey in music that I am a very very proud Ewe, absolutely nothing is going to change that fact. From the beginning of my journey till now, anybody who has truly followed me knows that I am a very proud Ewe. My native name is Mawusi and two of my daughters have {Ewe names]. Anytime I start ministration I say that Ewe is a spiritual language so I encourage everyone to learn Ewe.”
Meanwhile, host Cookie Tee has also rendered an apology.
Celestine gave up her Ewe surname Akakpo Dosu after marrying, she said during the interview with Cookie Tee, also an Ewe.
The two expressed gratitude to God for grace in getting “lighter” names after marriage as Cookie expressed her wish to also get a lighter surname after marriage.
The two came under public backlash as their comments were taken as reflection of their low self-esteem and inferiority complex.
