Akufo-Addo Congratulates Congo President on Re-election
The President of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has congratulated the President of the Republic of Congo, Félix Tshisekedi on his re-election.
The congratulatory message comes after the leader’s re-election was affirmed by the country’s Constitutional Court on January 9 after the opposition party, led by Moise Katumbi, contested the results.
In its ruling last week, it was upheld that the President won the election decisively by garnering 73.47 per cent of the votes, while the main opposition candidate Katumbi had 18.08 per cent of the votes.
“The Ghanaian people and I extend warm congratulations to the President-Elect of the Democratic Republic of Congo, His Excellency Félix Tshisekedi, on the affirmation of his victory in last December’s presidential elections by his country’s Constitutional Court,” President Akufo-Addo wrote.
“I look forward to continuing to work with President Tshisekedi in his second term of office, just as we did in his first, so we can continue to build on the strong ties of friendship and cooperation which exist between our two countries, and which are based on the shared agenda of development, prosperity and adherence to the tenets of good governance and the rule of law.”
He also commended the country for a peaceful election, adding that it has strengthened the frontiers of multiparty democracy in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
DR Congo held their presidential elections on December 20, 2023, to give a second term to President Tshisekedi, who was first elected in 2019.
The 60-year-old will be sworn into office on January 20 for a five-year tenure over the second-largest African country.
