Presidency Denies Plans to Reshuffle Army Heads
The Director of Communication at the Office of President Akufo-Addo, Eugene Arhin has rebutted speculations that the country’s Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo intends to render some changes to the army’s hierarchy.
It comes on the back of allegations that the President called a meeting with the heads of the country’s security agencies on January 2 to lay out his “politically motivated” plan to cause changes within the hierarchy of the Armed Forces.
It was alleged that the aim was to use the Military to brutalise citizens during the December 7 general elections but in a press statement, Mr Arhin denied the allegations as unfounded, noting there is the constitutional layout for a change in the leadership of the army.
He emphasized that, at a traditional beginning-of-year meeting with the President on said date, the Heads of Security agencies as usual offered him their best wishes for the coming year while the President used the opportunity to express his appreciation to them for their continued commitment to safeguarding the peace and stability of the nation.
“Contrary to the allegations made in the publication on social media, no such discussions about changes to the hierarchy of the Armed Forces were held during the meeting,” he highlighted.
Mr Arhin also conveyed the President’s assurance of a free, fair and transparent manner, devoid of electoral violence in the 2024 General Elections.
“In the interest of safeguarding the peace and stability of Ghana, the public is urged to disregard such unfounded speculations and publications aimed at triggering agitations within the rank and file of the Armed Forces,” he added.
