District Election: Police Hunt Persons Behind Senya Electoral Area Mayhem
An unknown number of suspects are on the red list of the Ghana Police Service after disrupting the District Assembly Election and Unit Committee Election at the Senya Electoral Area in Accra.
The disturbance hampered the conduct of the election on Tuesday, December 19, 2023, forcing it to be rescheduled.
In a statement, the police said, they “are currently pursuing some suspects in connection with a violent disturbance” and vowed to nab the suspects as soon as possible to face justice.
The suspects are reported to have damaged electoral materials and injured one person in the process at the electoral area.
“A Police reinforcement team took control of the situation and restored order. However, as a result of the incident, the Electoral Commission decided to suspend the process and announce a new date for the election in the area.”
The country held elections on Tuesday to elect assembly members and unit committee members.
The election did not wholly please some candidates as an unexpected suspension was announced in some areas in the Ashanti Region and the Eastern Region due to technical challenges.
Registering their displeasure, some of the affected candidates said the development was a huge blow as they had bused some electorates to the polling stations to exercise their franchise.
The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has set December 21 for the election in the affected areas.
