Betting Is For Lazy People- Hassan Ayariga
The Founder of the All People’s Party (APP), Hassan Ayariga has described betting as the lazy man’s job.
“Betting is for lazy people,” he said in an interview on 3FM.
The politician promised to ban the venture when he is voted into office as President.
“I will cancel it.”
He reckons that the venture is booming thanks to the high unemployment rate in the country and therefore intends to bring out the full potential of the country’s youth. He, however, did not disclose how he intends to do that overnight.
“When I need young people like to sit {before} computers and deciding to build the country to develop the highest technology in the world, you are sitting down betting.”
Reminded of the amount of taxes he will lose when he bans betting, Ayariga retorted, “We don’t need those taxes.”
It is estimated that around 26% of the world’s population have gambled at some point in their lives.
In Ghana, a report in late 2022 cited by GNA said 41.7% of Ghanaians were involved in sports betting within the preceding 12 months.
It also showed that 74.17% of respondents in the survey said they depended on betting for money.
The government introduced a 10% Withholding Tax on winnings on all betting and lotteries in mid-August.
The 10% withholding tax is deducted from winnings on lotteries, sports betting, and games of chance at the point of payout.
