Ghana’s U-20 Women World Cup Qualifier Squad Named
Coach Yussif Basigi has named twenty-three (23) players to face Guinea Bissau on Sunday in the quest to qualify for the U-20 Women’s World Cup tournament.
The squad to face Guinea Bissau include Afi Amenyeku, Deborah Brown, Comfort Yeboah, Fatimata Fuseini, Sarah Kulible, Abena Anoma Opoku, Abiba Issah, Takia Zakaria, Faiza Abdul Rashid, Rose Boakyewaa, Success Ameyaa, Wasima Mohammed, Doris Akaheeh, Tracey Twum and Helen Alormeyo.
Also are Jennifer Dawah, Mary Amponsah, Esther Owusu, Hannah Nyame, Abigail Sekyiwaa, Jennifer Mensah Adjei, Mercy Atobra, and Jacqueline Amponsah.
They will leave Ghana for Guinea Bissau today, October 6, 2023, for the first leg on October 8 and return to home for the second leg next week.
Ghana has a greater chance of qualifying just like any other member of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) following the increase in allotted slots from two to four by the world football governing body FIFA.
The FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup tournament had its slots increased from 16 to 24 after a meeting by the Federation’s Council on Wednesday.
It allotted four slots to the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), four for the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Confederation of North, four from Central America and Caribbean Association Football, (Concacaf), four from the South American Football Confederation the Continental (CONMEBOL), two from Oceania Football Confederation (OFC), five from Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) and a slot for Colombia- the host country.
Before this, the AFC had three slots, CAF two slots, Concacaf three, CONMEBOL two, UEFA four, plus the host country.
The 11th edition of the tournament will take place from September 5 to September 22, 2024 in Colombia.
