Minority Resolves To Protect And Defend Quayson Over “Persecution”
The Minority in parliament has described as “persecution” the trial of the Member of Parliament for Assin North Constituency, Hon James Gyakye Quayson and has therefore vowed to shield him from the government.
This comes after the High Court hearing his forgery and perjury trial decided to continue hearing the case daily despite an application for a stay of proceedings and an appeal against the mode of the hearing.
“The ruling by the High Court puts James Gyakye Quayson in the same position that he was placed in by the Supreme Court before the Assin North Constituency by-election,” a press statement signed by the Minority Chief Whip, Hon Governs Kwame Agbodza said.
The Minority is worried the legislator will not be able to exercise his mandate with the mode the trial is taking.
“If the Member of Parliament must appear in court on weekdays for trial, what time will he have to attend Parliamentary business to represent the people of Assin North?”
It said it will, therefore, deploy all arsenals available to it in protecting and defending the legislator.
Hon Quayson is standing trial for five counts of deceit of a public officer, forgery of a passport, knowingly making a false statutory declaration, perjury and false declaration to contest in the 2020 Parliamentary election.
He has pleaded not guilty to all the charges.
