Husband Sells Jointly Acquired House, Forces Wife and 7 Children to Move to Family House

Mavis Nyamaah, also known as Ataa, a 32-year-old woman from Kenyase Abirem, has come forward with allegations that her husband sold their jointly acquired house without her knowledge.

She claims that her husband moved her and their seven children to his family house and used part of the proceeds from the sale to purchase a car.

Ataa discovered the sale of their house when a friend informed her, and her husband did not deny the accusation.

“I had no idea that our house was sold until a friend informed me. It was a complete surprise, and I was devastated,” she said.

When her husband was invited to Masem on Opemsuo Radio, he admitted his wrongdoing and promised to reimburse the buyer of the house.

However, following the meeting with the Masem team, Ataa’s husband packed her belongings and attempted to send them to her mother’s house in Ataa’s absence. However, her mother refused to accept the belongings.

Ataa took matters into her own hands and purchased roofing sheets and other construction materials to fix up a single room for herself in the uncompleted house.

Subsequently, she received a letter from the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Ghana Police Service, summoning her for a meeting.

During the meeting, Ataa claims that the first two women she spoke to expressed shock at her husband’s behavior.

However, their supervisor, the third woman, informed Ataa that since her name was not stated as an owner on the land documents, she should refrain from visiting the property and advised her to seek legal recourse.

“She asked me if my name was on the land documents and I said no. She told me to stop visiting radio stations and go to court rather. I don’t have any lawyer, Masem is my lawyer,” she said. 

Ataa and her husband cohabited for 17 years before marriage, and she diligently supported him financially in acquiring the land and building the house.

Presently, Ataa and her seven children are residing in a single room in her husband’s family house.
