KMA Continues Using Decommissioned Landfill Site – Hon. Bannor Laments
Expressing deep concern, Hon. Elliot Fosu Bannor, a Presiding Member of the Asokwa Municipal Assembly has raised alarm over the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly’s (KMA) continued use of the decommissioned Oti landfill site in the Asokwa Municipality of the Ashanti Region.
In an interview on Nkwantannanso with Samuel Kwaw on June 2, emphasising the significance of decommissioning, the Presiding Member stated that the site should no longer be utilised as a landfill.
He revealed, “The plan was for re-engineering, and as such, the contract was awarded to Zoomlion Ghana Limited, who later subcontracted to Construction Ambassadors Limited. Initially, we even had plans to generate gas from the waste, but unfortunately, the subcontractor started work and eventually stopped.”
Despite its decommissioned status, KMA persists in dumping waste at the site, even collecting fees for waste disposal from others.
The Presiding Member recalled a tragic incident wherein a 14-year-old boy lost his life due to a massive garbage dump collapse at the same landfill site.
Highlighting the urgency of the situation, he urged the KMA to explore alternative waste management strategies, as relying on a decommissioned site may not be a sustainable solution for the future.
