Zongo Chiefs Call for Calm Amidst Dispute
Leaders of the Zongo communities in the Ashanti Region have called on the youth to remain calm, and avoid any offensive behaviour that could threaten the peace, and development of the area.
The call comes following tension caused by the nomination and selection of a new candidate in place of the late Sarkin Zango, Sultan Umar Farouk.
At a press conference held in Kumasi, Ameer Alhaji Osman Bun Ahmed, the Ashanti Regional Fulani Chief, emphasised the need for calm, while the matter is being resolved.
“Of late, there has been tension in and around the Zongo community followed by accusations and counter-accusations which is not in good taste for the development of our community,” he said.
The selection and subsequent election of the new Sarkin Zango has been challenged and the matter is still in court.
“With the case now at Manhyia Palace, let us patiently wait for the outcome so that we all rally behind one leader. We are calling on the Zongo community, especially our elders and the youth, to be patient and tolerant during this trying moment in the history of Zongo,” said Ameer Osman Bun Ahmed,”
The Ashanti Regional Fulani Chief also called on journalists, particularly those in the Zongo communities, to be mindful of their contents, especially those that have the potential to create chaos.
He urged them to be circumspect and censor their content, especially those that could incite violence.
“We are very much concerned about our brothers in the media, generally with special appeal to our Zongo media/radio presenters. They should try as much as they can to be very circumspect,” he said.
“It is about time that radio stations, especially those in our communities, censor whatever comes out, especially those that have the tendency to create mayhem”
