The government has finally compensated injured victims of the 2021 Ejura riot.
Amounts totalling GHc1,218,897 were given to the three victims.
The victims include Louis Ayikpa, Awal Misbau and Nazif Nuhu.
It will be recalled that the three-member Committee after probing the riot in September 2021 recommended that the government compensates the families of the deceased and the injured.
“The Committee recommends adequate Compensation for the families of the two deceased persons, namely, Abdul Nasir Yusif and Murtala Suraj Mohammed. Adequate compensation must also be paid to other injured persons, namely; Louis Ayikpa (20 years), Awal Misbau (16 years) and Nazif Nuhu (30 years). These are the names known to the Committee”, the report said.
On February 5, 2022, the Deputy Minister of the Interior, Naana Eyiah Quansah, presented a cheque for GHC250,000 each to the families of Abdul Nasir Yussif and Mutala Suraj- the deceased.
Exactly a year after that, the injured have also received their compensation.
Louis Ayikpa received a cheque for GHC 347,953, Awal Misbau received a cheque for GHC 678,591 and Nazif Nuhu received a cheque for GHC 192,425.
In a press statement dated February 15, 2023, the Fixthecountry group said the compensations were worked out by the Attorney-General on the basis of the legal claims made on behalf of the Victims by the lawyers provided by #FixTheCountry.
Background

On Tuesday, June 29, 2021 after the burial of Kaaka, some “irate youth” mounted roadblocks and protested.
Security personnel who were deployed to the scene upon the instruction of the Ashanti Regional Minister, Simon Osei Mensah, opened fire on them.
