Ghanaians Remember Ebony
Today marks exactly five years since dancehall artiste Priscilla Opoku-Kwarteng, known as Ebony met her untimely death in a road accident and Ghana is remembering her.
On social media, Ghanaians are digging memories of her performances and talent.
She made hits with her songs including “Hustle”, “Maame HwE”, “Kupe”, “Poison”, “Date Ur Father”, etc.
Until her demise, she was signed onto the record label Ruff Town owned by Ricky Nana Aygeman popularly known as Bullet.
Ebony was the first artiste signed to the record label.
According to her, she chose dancehall because she grew up naturally loving the genre.
“I grew up loving dancehall music. My parents love dancehall music”, she said in an interview she granted on TV3.
A section of Ghanaians criticised her for her outfits but in her interview, she said her outfits depict her identity.
“Whatever you see on TV is me. It’s not for publicity. Anybody that knows me knows that this is how Priscila is.”
She, however, used the opportunity to debunk speculations that she was on drugs.
She added, “I’m a very spiritual person…I’m a good Christian…I pray a lot, and read my bible though I haven’t been to the church for a while”.
Also, she noted she had no competitor among Ghanaian female dancehall artistes.
“No one is giving me competition, I can’t be intimidated by what they are doing because their style is different from mine.”
The self-professed spiritual artiste died in a road crash on February 8, 2018, while returning from a visit to her mother- who had returned from the United Kingdom- in Sunyani.
The accident occurred between Nyamebekyere and Nsuta around 23:45 hours when the Jeep with registration number AS497-16 in which the star and three others were travelling, crashed into a VIP bus with registration number GT 3232-17 while swerving a heap of sand along the road, according to a police report.
Ebony died with two others identified as Francisca Nkansah Kuri aged 27 years, and Lance Corporal Vondee Francis Atsu, aged 29 years leaving only her driver to survive.
Five years down the line, Ghanaians are remembering her for her contribution to the music industry.
Whereas some shared her performances, others used her pictures.
