2022 NDC Conference Riot: Two More Arrested

Six persons have so far been arrested for their alleged connection with the disturbances that occurred during the National Youth and Women’s Conference of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in December.

This comes after two more suspects were arrested in Wenchi and Cape Coast.

Riot

During the Women and Youth Conference at the University of Cape Coast in the Central Region on December 10, 2022, a violent clash ensued between two factions which resulted in the injury of three and damage of properties.

The police explained, “while proceedings were ongoing at the Congress two rival groups violently clashed throwing stones, blocks, sticks, clubs, chairs among others, causing injury to three persons and destruction to property.”

Sixteen people were identified during a review of Police-specific video footage of the event and declared wanted.

As part of efforts to find out the suspects, a GHc10,000 bounty was placed on their heads.

Arrest

Almost a month after the incident, four were arrested within the space of two days.

The first two were arrested in Tamale on January 7, 2023.

They were identified by the police as Abdul Halid Shaibu and Ibrahim Razak.

Meanwhile, Iddrisu Abass who is believed to be the ringleader and suspect Dawda Mohammed Nazir were arrested at Kintampo and Wenchi in the Bono and Bono East regions respectively on 8th January 2023, the police said in a statement.

Latest Arrest

It is unknown when the two new suspects were picked by the police.

The two are Abdul-Fataw Adams and Hajj Dawda Hassan.

Abdul-Fataw and Dawda Hassan were arrested at Wenchi in the Bono Region and Tishegu, Tamale in the Northern Region respectively.

According to the police Abdul-Fataw has been released on bail while Dawda Hassan is in Police custody.

“The intelligence operations are still ongoing to get the remaining 10 suspects arrested”, a statement from the police said.
