Henry Asante: We Need Evident Pay Cut Not Only Word Of Mouth
Vice President of Alliance for Accountable Governance (AFAG), and the People’s National Congress (PNC), Mr. Henry Asante has stated that Ghanaians need an evident pay cut as announced by President Akufo-Addo but not only a word of mouth.
President Akufo-Addo has announced his decision to offer 30% of his salary and extend the salary cut to all Article 71 Office holders to relieve the nation’s coffers of the current pressures.
Article 71 office holders include the President, the Vice-President, the Speaker of Parliament, the Chief Justice, and the Justices of the Supreme Court.
The rest are Members of Parliament (MPs), Ministers of State, political appointees, and public servants with salaries charged to the Consolidated Fund but enjoying special constitutional privileges.
Speaking on Opemsuo Radio with the Nkwantananso show host Agudey, Mr. Henry Asante said the president should come clear and transparent in letting Ghanaians know the amount of his salary and how much to be deducted into the nations coffers. He emphasized that it is not legally right for the president to force all the Article 71 holders to offer a 30% pay cut just as he has done but must be voluntary.
He added that offering 30% pay cut is not much to be impressed at as the allowances these state officials receive are even more than their salaries, therefore challenging them to offer their allowances as well.
