We Need A Constitutional Review; It Has Made The President Too Powerful – Governance Expert

Vice President of Alliance for Accountability and Governance (AFAG), Mr. Henry Asante has stated that the constitution, upon which the system of government of Ghana has adopted, has made the Head of the Executive who is the President too powerful.

According to him, the constitution has vested so many powers in the president that one cannot easily challenge the president because these powers are backed by Executive Instruments.

Mr. Asante said, if there is something we ought to do then it should be the review of the constitution to reduce the degree of powers vested in the president.

He made the statement in relation to the resignation of the UK Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, and dissected the issue of whether or not the African leader can emulate such a step.

The AFAG President stated that Ghana is practicing the Westminster system which is a combination of both the UK and the USA systems of government and constitutions which makes the president more powerful even than the American president.

He stated that for the UK’s Prime Minister to resign is something that the African leader will not dream about let alone take to action.
