KMA has the Power to Regulate Tricycles – Head of Transport
Mr Randy Wilson , Head of Transport Department at the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has indicated that, KMA has the authority to regulate the operation of tricycles within the Central Business District (CBD).
In an interview on Opemsuo Radio’s Nkwantananso with George Adjei, he emphasized that the Road Traffic Act stipulates that tricycles are not meant for commercial services.
“Since tricycles are already in operation, and Parliament has taken no action, the KMA has decided to take on the responsibility of regulation. This applies specifically to the CBD within the KMA jurisdiction,” he stated.
According to him, the ban of tricycles within the CBD was postponed to allow for further engagements with stakeholders.
He explained that the KMA is undertaking a project it calls Kumasi Transport Re-organisation. At the start of the project last year, Sept 1, tricyle operators were not included.
However, in April this year, the General Assembly of the KMA met and decided to add tricycle operators.
He explained that they were added because the problems associated with tricycles seemed more than all the other transport operators combined.
According to him, reports also show that tricycle crashes increase every year.
“If we are not vigilant, tricycles could become a major cause not only of congestion but also of accidents within the CBD,” he warned.
