7000 Of 30,000 Household Toilets Built So Far Under 1 Household 1 Toilet Project – KMA
The World Bank’s Water and Sanitation project was extended to the Greater Kumasi Metropolitan Area to help increase the level of sanitation in the metropolis after a couple of years of its implementation in the Greater Accra Region.
The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) in respect of the project lobbied 30, 000 toilets to be built for homes lacking toilet facilities in the Greater Kumasi Area including the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), Old Tafo Municipal Assembly, Suame Municipal Assembly, Asokwa Municipal Assembly, Oforikrom Municipal Assembly, Kwadaso Municipal, Ejisu Municipal and Asokore Mampong Municipal Assembly. This was under the 1 Household 1 Toilet Project.
Speaking with Opemsuo News Reporters, Effah Mensah William, the Environmental Officer for the KMA, Mr Joseph Kiddy-Kodua said the project seeks to deal with poor sanitation and open defecation, thereby providing toilet facilities to every household especially in the urban areas.
Speaking on the progress of the project, Mr. Kiddy-Kodua said over 7,000 out of the 30,000 targeted have been built so far in the Greater Kumasi whereas 801 household toilets have been built in the Kumasi Metropolis.
He said, the KMA has targeted to build 15, 000 toilets this year, hoping that more people will patronise to meet this target.
Mr. Kiddy-Kodua indicated that the project is swiftly increasing as compared to the previous years; he said the number of registrations in the first quarter of the year 2023 is quite encouraging.
Mr. Joseph Kiddy-Kodua says the Assembly has put in place strategies and measures to boost patronage of the 1 Household 1Toilet Project within the Greater Kumasi Area.
The Environmental Officer said the project is rapidly progressing so far as the Assembly puts in awareness creation measures to build more household toilets within the Metropolis.
He says the progress of the project itself has attracted more residents to opt for their share of the project as intensive education and awareness creation have been revived to boost patronage. He says workshop programs are also organized for the Staff on applying these new strategies to meet the target.
Mr. Kiddy-Kodua therefore urged residents who lack toilet facilities in their homes to contact the KMA or their Sub-Metros to register for the project and subsequently get them built to ensure clean environment.
