Twenty-two Togolese nationals have been taken into police custody after travelling to Ghana to engage in illegal mining in the Savannah region.
The suspects were travelling in a KIA truck with registration number BA 223-12 to Tuntumba, a galamsey hotspot, when they were intercepted by police officers from the Savannah Regional Police Intelligence Department on January 23, 2026.
“Upon interrogation, the occupants stated that they were nationals of Togo and were travelling to Tuntumba, a known illegal mining community, with the intention of engaging in galamsey activities,” the Ghana Police Service reported in a statement.
The suspects are currently in police custody and are expected to be handed over to the Ghana Immigration Service for the necessary immigration and legal processes.
