Banks Can Drive Our Economic Growth – Otumfuo

The Monarch of the Asante Kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has urged financial institutions to increase their contribution to economic growth and national development.

Speaking during a courtesy call by the Executive Committee and senior management of Stanbic Bank Ghana, His Majesty outlined the pivotal role banks must play in national progress.

“I am still looking at how the banks can push the economy. We need to create jobs. If we say that the private sector is the engine of growth, then the banks are an integral part of that engine. How do we drive it to make it work?”

He noted that banks play a vital role in establishing small-scale industries and supporting trading through the provision of capital, encouraging them to help transition the national economy into an export-driven one.

Otumfuo also referenced an upcoming high-level investment initiative aimed at job creation in 2027, challenging financial institutions to position themselves to capitalise on it.

“I hear the Governor is going to announce a new budget for a top fund investment aimed at creating jobs in 2027. I believe you will take advantage of that. The economy has stabilised, but stabilisation must now translate into forward movement to create employment.”

This, His Majesty affirmed, would directly improve the livelihoods and financial well-being of citizens.

Acknowledging the challenges financial institutions face following shifts in treasury bill yields, he called for innovative business strategies to ensure long-term sustainability.

“Previously, you were having a field day with treasury bills and making money, but that is no longer the case. We must be innovative to see how best we can navigate this.”

The delegation paid a courtesy call on the Asantehene on November 6, 2026, at the Manhyia Palace to update him on developments within the bank and seek his counsel and blessings.

The delegation, led by Chief Executive Officer Kwamina Asomaning, included Musah Abdallah, Executive Head of Corporate & Investment Banking; Chidinma Braye-Yankee, Head of Brand and Marketing; Jacklin Osei-Kusi, Head of Client Coverage; Esi Korama Amoah, Manager of Governance; and Anthony Asare, Regional Manager.
