UNSGSA for Financial Health Engages Nananom

The United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Advocate for Financial Health, Her Majesty Queen Máxima of the Netherlands, has engaged traditional rulers within the Asante Kingdom on issues surrounding financial health and resilience.

The meeting with paramount chiefs and queens took place at the Manhyia Palace on November 4, 2026.

Among the traditional leaders present were Nana Effah Apenteng, Bompatahene; Nana Kwame Baffoe, Nkoranzahene; Nana Darkowaa Ampem, Yamfohemaa; Nana Adwoa Apor Dwamena, Bechemhemaa; and Oheneyere Akyaamaa III.

The closed-door meeting focused on empowering traditional authorities to advocate for policies and financial services that strengthen the financial resilience and economic well-being of their people.

As part of her mandate, Queen Máxima advocates for safe, affordable, and high-quality financial services—including transaction accounts, micro-loans, savings products, and insurance—while seeking commitment from leaders, regulators, international bodies, civil society, and the private sector to empower financially underserved communities.

As the UNSGSA, Queen Máxima advocates for financial products and service that help people to manage their daily needs, protect them against financial setbacks, help to invest in their future and gain confidence in their financial future.

The engagement with Nananom followed her bilateral meeting with the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

Her delegation included H.E. Jeroen Verheul, Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to Ghana; Peter McConaghy, UNSGSA Senior Advisor; and Thys Hoekman, the Queen’s Private Secretary.
