No One from Tetretem Has Ever Ascended Duayaw Nkwanta Stool – Asantehene

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asantehene, has stated that no member of the Tetretem family has ever ascended the Duayaw Nkwanta stool in its history.
Speaking at a Kumasi Traditional Council meeting on November 2, 2026, His Majesty made reference to three royal households—Tetretem, Samantwea, and Wirempe.
He explained that the Samantwea family, who originally shared rights to the stool alongside the Wirempe family, was barred from ascension following the theft of certain stool regalia by two of its members.
This left the Wirempe family as the sole eligible lineage.
Regarding the Tetretem family, Otumfuo noted that they fled the land after a historical Asantehene besieged the area to claim it.
“Some fled to Dormaa while others went to Côte d’Ivoire. I gave the land to my son. The Duayaw Nkwanta stool bears my son’s name—it is the Yiadom Stool,” Otumfuo stated, adding that Duayaw Nkwanta has six black stools representing chiefs who died while on the stool.
His Majesty also referenced ten other occupants who had the opportunity to ascend the stool but were ultimately destooled.
Despite these historical accounts, the Asantehene reaffirmed that no descendant of the Tetretem family has ever occupied the stool.
His Majesty made these remarks while addressing lingering disputes regarding Duayaw Nkwanta, stirred up by one Ofori Adu of Tetrem, who claims his forebears owned a stool within the paramountcy.
Ofori Adu is reported to have led an enstoolment process despite losing the case previously brought before the Asantehene.
Ofori was scheduled to reappear before the Council to substantiate his claims following his initial appearance on October 26, 2026. However, he failed to honour the summons.
The Asantehene consequently directed the Bantamahene, Baffour Owusu Amankwatia IV, to ensure Ofori appears before the Council at its next sitting scheduled for November 19, 2026.
“He has one final opportunity to come and substantiate his claims. If he fails to appear, I will proceed to direct the Wirempe family to nominate a candidate for enstoolment,” Otumfuo warned.
Meanwhile, the Asantehene urged the Wirempe family to exercise restraint.
“Yours is an internal family matter. Allow me to resolve the external dispute first, after which I will examine your issue and settle it,” he concluded.
